Geographical Environment Observation Services

Objective

The GEOS project aims as addressing the increasing requirements of legal information about the environment, follwing the reception, in the European Single Act, of the "environment" as a fundamental element in the life of European Community, and following the development of specific rules for the environment (about 200 directives).

The GEOS project undertakes a wider environmental concept, in conformity with the Community view (art. 3 of directive on environmental impact evaluation and European Single Act principles), in such a way as to orient the information especially towards prevention of environmental damage and towards the best environmental exploitation.

The GEOS project considers as fundamental the geographical dimension of legal information in such a way that legal regulations will be related directly to the territory and the Community rules will be contemplated in their real application on a European territorial basis.

The GEOS project will make available to a large number of users a legal-environmental database; in fact the access keys to data will be simple and easy to use: the end users do not need to be expert in GIS, nor in legal information retrieval.

The information will be selected with particular attention to the economic world and the public administrations; this will ensure marketability to the services and, consequently, the indispensable updating of the database.
