Project description

English EN

Belgian prison farms test Europe's prison system

Prison farms are correctional facilities where convicts are employed in open fields, engaging in an array of activities including agriculture, farming and logging. The EU-funded ARCHPRIS project focuses on a comparative study of prison farms in Belgium, Finland and Italy. The project proposes to deploy in rural setting the institutional model proposed by the NGO De Huizen. Its proposal for a network of small detention houses, set within an urban context, is currently challenging the existing penal system in Belgium and can be adopted as a starting point for wider critical reconceptualisation of related institutions existing in Europe.
