Improved assessment of NPP concrete structures toward ageing
A nuclear power plant involves complex engineering structures that are important to its safe and reliable operation. Concrete structures in nuclear power plants provide foundation, structural support, biological shielding, containment, and protection against internal and external hazards. The ageing of these concrete structures increases the risk to public health and safety, if not controlled. The EU-funded ACES project will advance the assessment of safety performance for long-term operation of nuclear power plants. Experimental and modelling techniques will be used to study related deterioration and ageing mechanisms. The project will focus on physical understanding of the degradation processes, such as radiation effects, internal swelling reactions and liner corrosion. The findings will also assist in improving the safety and operational designs of next-generation nuclear plants.
