Formal and OO-Methods for Customer Driven Specifications

Objective

The main objective of the application experiment is to concentrate on the specification phase of the software project and apply new informal and formal methodologies and tools to solve the problems in the earliest stages of the software development. As this experiment also involves our customer. our goal is to alleviate problems that are caused by incomplete and ambiguous requirements as well as problems associated with the software specification phase.

In this experiment we intend to use the informal Object Modeling Technique and complement it with a formal specification methodology, DisCo, developed at Tampere University of Technology. We would like to know if formal methodologies and associated tools could benefit both the requirements generation and the software specification phase. This could bring a common and exact language between the customer and us. It should be noted, however. that formal methodologies are not easily applied. One result of this experiment is if they are worth-while in the customer driven projects.
