Ship-assessment of the safety of hazardous industrial processes in the presence of design faults

Objective

Title: Quantitative Analysis - 2
This project will make a step towards developing more precise methods for analysis and assessment of safety of hazardous plants. The project will aim maximise transfer of technology between participants. It will be structured around two tasks.
Task 1: Hierarchical, heterogeneous approach to safety analysis. The basic assumption of this research is that while analysing safety we will face the problem of heterogeneous hierarchy of models representing the system. The basic distinction is between the models suitable to represent the whole application, the system design and the software design. A result of this task will be development of a formal approach to specification and analysis of safety related computer applications which supports a heterogeneous hierarhical modelling.
Task 2: Application of Formal Methods to the assessment of critical software.
The aim of this task is to investigate the potential of Formal Methods for being used to strenghten the assessment process by introducing more preciseness and analytical power into it.
The results of the research will include evaluation of a chosen formal method as a tool supporting formal assessment of critical software.
