Boltzmann models for polyatomic gases and mixtures: analysis, macroscopic limits and entropy methods

Project description

Study seeks deeper understanding of nonequilibrium gas dynamics

Understanding how gases behave in complex systems is crucial for many engineering applications. While kinetic theory provides accurate models for gas flows, most mathematical studies are limited to oversimplified cases, such as single monatomic gases, leaving more complex gas mixtures underexplored. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the BAME project will study monatomic and polyatomic gas mixtures through a system of Boltzmann-like equations. BAME will advance the mathematical theory by investigating the regularising effects of Boltzmann operators as well as the integrability and smoothness of solutions. Ultimately, it will seek to analyse the long-term behaviour of these systems using quantitative entropy methods.

Objective

BAME is a project in applied mathematics addressing challenges in the kinetic theory of gases. The focus is on a system of Boltzmann-like equations that describes gas mixtures composed of monatomic and polyatomic gases. Evidence has shown that kinetic models accurately describe strong nonequilibrium processes in gas flows. However, most of the mathematical theory is limited to the oversimplified case of a single monatomic gas. This project aims to contribute in filling the gap between the study of more intrigant gases relevant to applications and the current state of the art in the mathematical theory of kinetic equations. Specifically, the objectives are to study the regularizing effects of the associated Boltzmann operators, as well as the integrability and smoothness of solutions, with the ultimate goal of analyzing the large time behavior using quantitative entropy methods. The project will bring together the applicant with a distinguished expertise in modelling and analysis of polyatomic gases and mixtures at the mesoscopic level and the host with a ground-breaking work on entropy methods for macroscopic reactive systems. The two levels of description will be formally linked through hydrodynamic limits during the secondment, leading to a redesign of the entropy production program for the system of interest. The fellowship will enable the applicant to gain new analytical skills and significantly enhance transferable skills through the extensive training offered by the host University of Graz. Additionally, it will greatly expand her research network, facilitate participation in leading events in the field, and ultimately strengthen the ability to establish her own research group and advance her career in academia.
