New insights on the circulation and Transport of Upper and interMediate water masses and Biogechemical variability in the north BalEaric CurrenT

Project description

Upper and intermediate water masses properties and transport

The circulation of Atlantic Water (AW) and Western Intermediate Water (WIW) plays a key role in the dynamics of the Western Mediterranean. In the Balearic sub-basin, these water masses split; one branch flows through the Balearic Channels, while the other forms the northern Balearic Current. Despite their importance, the circulation patterns and volume transport of these waters remain poorly understood. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the TUMBET project will investigate the properties and transport of upper and intermediate water masses in the Balearic region using high-resolution underwater glider data collected from five areas around the archipelago. It aims to provide a detailed seasonal and interannual characterisation of these water masses.

Objective

The circulation of upper and intermediate (AW and WIW) water masses play a key role in the hydrodynamics of the Western Mediterranean, where these water masses flow cyclonically along the slope, exhibiting seasonal fluctuations in volume transport. Upon reaching the Balearic sub-basin, the flow splits, with one branch moving south towards the Balearic Channels, while the other forms the north Balearic Current (BC) along the northern slope of the Balearic Islands. Although the Balearic Channels have been recognized as a major pathway for AW and WIW, significant gaps remain in understanding their circulation and volume transports, particularly along the northern Balearic slope and the broader circulation around the Balearic Islands. This project aims to quantitatively characterize the properties and transport of upper and intermediate water masses in the Balearic region, using high-resolution underwater glider data from five areas around the archipelago. The expected results are: 1) a better understanding of the role of the BC in AW and WIW circulation, 2) a detailed characterization of the oceanographic properties of these water masses in seasonal and interannual contexts, and 3) quantify their transport rates in the BC compared to the Balearic Channels and other regions of the archipelago. The host institution expertise in physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, and climate change in the Mediterranean Sea will be crucial for the projects success and the applicants training. The planned secondment will focus on using inverse box models to assess water mass transports, leading to a more in-depth knowledge of circulation patterns in the Balearic Islands. This pioneering work will extend European leadership in Mediterranean hydrodynamic studies, address key EU challenges under Horizon Europe and provide valuable insights for numerical modelers. TUMBET represents an extraordinary opportunity for the applicants scientific and professional development.
