Structural Health Monitoring of Hydrogen Composite Overwrapped Vessels

Project description

Advanced real-time monitoring for safer hydrogen storage vessels

Hydrogen energy holds promise for a sustainable future, but challenges in storage and transportation remain. Composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) offer a strong, corrosion-resistant solution, yet concerns about their integrity and safety persist. Currently, there is no EU-wide standard for assessing their condition. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the SHyCOV project will develop an advanced structural health monitoring (SHM) system specifically designed for COPVs. By integrating advanced ultrasonic wave modelling, experimental testing, and innovative sensor technologies, the project will create a cost-effective, real-time monitoring system to detect damage in COPVs, extend their lifespan, and prevent failures. This SHM solution has significant commercial potential and supports global efforts to transition to sustainable energy.

Objective

Hydrogen energy is a promising component of a sustainable future, though its extensive adoption is challenged by issues in storage and transportation. Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) have emerged as a promising solution due to their superior strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. However, maintaining the structural integrity of COPVs under the demanding conditions of hydrogen storage remains a major concern. Micro-damages and operational impacts can compromise the safety and lifespan of these vessels, yet there is currently no standardized EU-wide methodology for in-service condition assessment.

The SHyCOV project (Structural Health Monitoring of Hydrogen Composite Overwrapped Vessels) addresses this critical gap by developing an advanced Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system tailored for COPVs. This project is timely given the anticipated growth of hydrogen infrastructure in Europe and the crucial role COPVs will play in this transition. SHyCOV employs a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating advanced ultrasonic wave propagation modeling, experimental testing, and innovative sensor technologies to detect and localize damage within COPVs. The outcome will be a cost-effective, real-time monitoring system that extends the lifespan of hydrogen storage vessels and prevents potential catastrophic failures.

By bridging a significant gap in current EU standards and ensuring the safe deployment of hydrogen energy, SHyCOV will enhance scientific knowledge and facilitate the broader adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source. The project also provides researcher with essential skills in assessing structural damage in hydrogen composite vessels, positioning him as a leader in this innovative field. SHyCOV’s SHM solution holds considerable commercial potential, supporting future industrial applications and aligning with global initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and transition to sustainable energy.
