Objective The main goal of the proposed research is to develop an integrated system for the interpretation of geophysical data, to provide civil protection organisations with preventive damage scenarios and to alert civil protection structures in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. The system will be designed as a learning tool, able to enhance its capability as the scientists will develop new time dependent hazard models correlated with various geophysical parameters. The data learning set will be provided by the multiparameter geophysical observatory developed by ISMES on behalf of ING and Italian Civil Defence Ministery in Sicilia (project poseidon). In the same centre the system will be installed on existing hardware to start a trial period, during which it should perform three main tasks: 1) Alert civil defence immediately after an earthquake, giving all the important characteristics of the event, and providing thoretical damage maps for addressing the effort of rescue teams. These maps will evolve from homogeneous isotropic propagation to more detailed models as the knowledge of the phenomena and the area will increase. 2) Survey the incoming real time signals from the multiparameter network in order to detect patterns (in one or more variables) considered as possible precursors. These patterns will provide a data base for the statistical assessment of precursor reliability. 3) In the final phase, after precursors have been considered as significant, the system will provide the possibility of having damage scenarios using the same procedure of damage evaluation as in 1) and using one or more plausible sources for the impending earthquake.
