CUTTING-EDGE HUMAN IN VITRO AND IN SILICO BIOMEDICAL TOOLS ON BRAIN DISORDERS

Project description

The future of brain disorder modelling

Brain disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Despite their prevalence, effective cures or disease-modifying therapies are limited, creating a major societal and economic burden. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the VISI-ON-BRAIN project aims to address this challenge by training doctoral candidates in cutting-edge strategies to model brain disorders. Through interdisciplinary education, cross-sectoral collaboration and industrial secondments, participants will gain expertise to drive innovation in brain disorder research. They will also be involved in projects that utilise bioengineering, in vitro systems and computational in silico approaches. The ultimate goal is to train a new generation of scientists with the skills to advance therapeutic discovery.

Objective

Brain disorders (BD)s have become one of the leading causes of disability in the world with about a third and a half of all Europeans suffering from BD in their lifetime. Patients falling under BDs do not have cure or disease-modifying options and as a result, BDs are one of the major societal challenges with a high economic burden impact for Europe and the rest of the world. The primary aim in VISI-ON-BRAIN is to provide the appropriate training for the participating DCs, guaranteeing that each individual DC is able to achieve and finalize a PhD degree based on their performed research work and at the same time equip them with tools on how to collaborate and work towards new and innovative technologies for modeling BDs. VISI-ON-BRAIN consists of six closely interlinked Work Packages (WPs), closely managed through WP6. The central theme – in vitro and in silico modeling - will be executed through scientific WP1-WP3 – bioengineering, In vitro modelling of BDs and In silico modelling - by which the individual DCs are jointly trained within and across multiple scientific disciplines using different didactic methods in WP4 – education and training - to enable efficient work on his/her own project as well as in joint efforts with other DCs within and across the WPs1-3. Each DC project is directly or indirectly linked to other DC projects and contributes with different pieces of the gear in different scientific WPs, which in turn makes up a major piece of the large machinery to be merged into different scientific deliverables. The education and training and industrial secondments will provide basic DC training in the individual scientific disciplines and inter- and trans-disciplinary training in and across multiple scientific fields, and provide DCs with transferrable, inter-sectorial skills and tools to prepare them for new thinking, innovation and true inter-disciplinary work, and communication, dissemination and exploitation of their results through WP5.
