Iran, Israel, and the Persian Gulf in Historical and Contemporary Dynamics

Project description

New perspectives on Middle Eastern research

Until now, research into the political landscape of the Middle East has been mainly conducted on a country-by-country basis. However, this method of research does not consider the broader picture. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the IIPGHCD project will focus on the triangular relationship between the three main powers in the region: Arab states in the Persian Gulf, Iran, and Israel from 1971 to 2025. The research will result in the first comprehensive report on how these states influence one another, taking into consideration the historical shifts that drive today’s security and diplomatic crises. Overall, the project’s goal is to create a historical roadmap to help European and international leaders make more informed policy decisions.

Objective

IIPGHCD – Iran, Israel, and the Persian Gulf in Historical and Contemporary Dynamics will provide a new reading of Middle Eastern history and politics from 1971 to 2025 through a triangular study of Iran, Israel, and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Breaking with existing interpretations that treat the history of Iran and the Arab–Israeli conflict in isolation, the project’s overall objective is to produce the first integrated account of Iranian–Gulf– Israeli relations, situating them within broader transformations in global order from the Cold War to today’s multipolar world. By creating a historically informed and comparative framework, IIPGHCD will contribute to both scholarship and policymaking, clarifying how the region’s past and present are interconnected and how they shape contemporary European and international policy concerns.
