Novel MXene Synthesis and Functionalization for High-Performance E-SERS Applications

Project description

Raman spectroscopy for ultra-trace detection of harmful chemicals

The Green Deal and new EU regulations on harmful chemicals such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polychlorinated biphenyls require efficient, cost-effective detection methods. A promising solution is the development of electrically modulated surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (E-SERS) sensors. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the MX-ESERS project will develop E-SERS sensors that combine high conductivity, adjustable chemistry and strong analyte binding for sensitive detection. It will create low-cost, real-time Raman spectroscopy platforms using innovative MXene materials and electric-field modulation for ultra-trace detection of PFAS and persistent organic pollutants. The project will integrate these technologies into scalable devices while employing advanced strategies (energy self-sufficient architectures and metal organic framework functionalisation). Additionally, it will provide training in materials design and environmental sensing.

Objective

The implementation of the Green Deal and new regulations on PFAS, PCBs and other harmful chemicals in the European Union necessitates efficient, reliable and cost-effective detection methods. One promising approach is the development of electrically modulated surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (E-SERS) sensors using MXene hybrid materials to meet this challenge. MXenes combine high conductivity, tunable chemistry and strong analyte binding, making them ideal for sensitive and selective detection. MX-ESERS develops reliable, adaptable Raman spectroscopy platforms for low-cost, real-time environmental monitoring using innovative MXene materials and electric-field modulation. Ultra-trace detection of PFAS/POPs and their integration into scalable devices for the real world are the goal of advanced strategies such as energy self-sufficient architectures and the functionalisation of MOFs. The project also provides training in materials design, device engineering and environmental sensing and supports the researcher’s development towards independent research leadership.
