Resistive Memory Interfaces for Next-generation Detection

Project description

New solution for next-generation smart sensors

Air pollution is a major health and environmental issue, underscoring the need for compact, selective and low-power gas-sensing technologies. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the REMIND project will develop a multifunctional platform integrating a memristive device with a mid-infrared (MIR) photodetector for simultaneous electrical and optical gas detection. The memristive element features vertical and lateral electrode architectures to enhance surface exposure, allowing detailed characterisation of hysteresis dynamics influenced by gas adsorption. When combined with MIR spectroscopy, this system can identify molecules with high selectivity in complex gas mixtures. Integrating detection, memory and computation into a miniaturised device, the project will deliver an energy-efficient solution for real-time environmental monitoring and next-generation smart sensors.

Objective

Air pollution remains a critical environmental and health challenge, requiring the development of compact, selective, and low-power gas sensing technologies. The REMIND project introduces a multifunctional platform that integrates a memristive device with a mid-infrared (MIR) photodetector, enabling simultaneous electrical and optical gas detection with built-in memory. The memristive element, designed with both vertical and lateral electrode architectures, maximizes active surface exposure, allowing detailed I–V characterization of hysteresis dynamics influenced by gas adsorption. Coupled with MIR spectroscopy, the system achieves molecular-level identification and high selectivity in complex gas mixtures. By uniting detection, memory, and computation within a single miniaturized device, REMIND advances beyond conventional sensing paradigms, offering an energy-efficient, multifunctional solution for real-time environmental monitoring and next-generation smart sensors.
