European Researchers' Night in Estonia 2026-2027

Project description

Bringing science closer to everyday life in Estonia

Public understanding of science and interest in research careers need to be strengthened, especially among young people, by making science more visible, relatable and accessible in everyday life. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ERNEst26-27 project will organise the European Researchers’ Night in Estonia. Events in 2026 will be organised around the theme of energy. In 2027, the theme will be health. More than 300 events will be held annually nationwide. The list includes science shows, lab visits, quizzes and other hands-on activities, as well as visits by scientists to schools as part of efforts to connect research with education. The overall goal is to make science accessible and engaging for the public and inspire students to explore science as a career path.

Objective

The main objective of the Estonian edition of the European Researchers’ Night (ERNEst26-27) is to spread the word about the importance of research and the role of researchers in the society via the events of ERNEst26-27 and to inspire young people to consider careers in various fields of science mainly both via the Researchers at Schools initiative as well as via the European Researchers’ Night main programme. In order to make ERNEst26-27 connected to people’s everyday lives and challenges, both renditions of the ERN in Estonia will have a highly relatable topic: ERNEst26 will focus on ENERGY in the widest sense of the word and ERNEst27 will focus on HEALTH.

ERNEst26-27 will use a variety of hands-on and minds-on formats (including but not limited to science shows, science cafés, open laboratory visits, science meets humour activities, games, quizze, treasure hunts, science camps and special public events utilised in carrying out a total of 300 events in 40 locations annually across Estonia to bring researchers closer to citizens and schools, increase awareness of science and its benefits, inspire and support young people to pursue STEAM careers, Strengthen science communication and inclusiveness and support school teachers and educators in developing a scientific approach and creating learning opportunities.
