Short-wave Infrared to Visible Light Electronic Up-Conversion for Imaging with eco-friendly III-V quantum Dots

Project description

Sustainable infrared-to-visible imaging for portable devices

Infrared imaging technologies have important applications in fields such as night vision, healthcare and security, but existing systems are often expensive, bulky and dependent on environmentally problematic materials. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the E-LUCID project will develop a new generation of pixel-less devices that convert short-wave infrared light into visible images. It will use environmentally compliant III-V colloidal quantum dots, which offer tunable optical properties and can be processed using cost-effective manufacturing methods. The project aims to achieve efficient, stable and real-time infrared-to-visible conversion in lightweight and energy-efficient systems suitable for portable applications ranging from wearable night-vision systems to healthcare, environmental monitoring and public safety.

Objective

The technology of infrared-to-visible electronic up-conversion imaging opens opportunities in night vision, low-light sensing, medical diagnostics, security, and wearable systems. However, most existing solutions are bulky, costly, or based on non-sustainable materials, which limits their broader use in compact and portable devices. The EU-funded project will develop a new generation of pixel-less short-wave infrared (SWIR) to visible up-conversion devices using RoHS-compliant III-V colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). These nanomaterials combine solution processability with tunable optical properties and provide an environmentally sustainable alternative to lead- or cadmium-based technologies. By advancing materials design and device engineering, the project will enable real-time, efficient, and stable SWIR-to-visible conversion in a lightweight and energy-efficient platform. The outcome will be a new class of imagers ideally suited for wearable night-vision tools, firefighter and defense helmets, as well as applications in healthcare, security, and environmental monitoring.
