Objective
ISLAND OF KNOWLEDGE (CURA-KNOW) is Curaçao’s European Researchers’ Night and Researchers-at-Schools programme (2026–2027), coordinated by CITI (Curaçao Innovation and Technology Institute) with TAO Curaçao, COIA (Curaçao Outdoor Industry Alliance), and Ocean of Knowledge. The project brings science, research and researchers closer to the public, within the context of a Caribbean Small Island Development State, with a special focus on families, pupils and students. We aim to do this through a mix of interactive school challenges, high-impact cross‑media campaigns, culminating in community events at Rif Fort Village in historic downtown Willemstad. CURA-KNOW bridges the gap between research and the community by turning the island itself into a learning space under the motto “Discover your island through a new lens.”
Although not large in quantity, Curaçao’s research ecosystem does provide some real‑world stories. Examples of this are CARMABI , Curaçao Sea Aquarium Research Facility, and initiatives such as PROTEUS, Floating Wind project, and Deep‑Sea Water Cooling. In addition to this, the University of Curaçao also recently announced its renewed focus on research. In spite of this, the consortium partners feel that research activities like this are disconnected from the local community and environment.
Scope & scale (2026–2027):
two editions of European Researchers’ night, consisting of pop-up showcases, Digital Scavenger Hunt, linking urban heritage with nearby mangroves;
two Research‑at‑School ‘Science Quests’, with family‑friendly showcases and development of teacher toolkits that will be made available through the Curaçao Island of Learning Platform and making use of Open Badges.
two four‑week media campaigns across traditional and social media.
Expected reach: 10,000 reach/year and 150–400 on‑site/year; 480 - 1440 pupils and 16 – 48 teachers engaged over 2 years; 10–20 researchers/year interacting and showcasing their work.
