Objective
The objective of Co4RES is to develop and demonstrate innovative control and operation tools enabling secure, efficient, and coordinated integration of very high shares of renewable energy into Europe’s power systems. The project addresses the full range of challenges posed by wind, solar, and new electricity demand sources by providing solutions that operate across all voltage levels and time horizons. Co4RES delivers coherent forecasting and control hierarchies, ensuring temporal and spatial consistency to support TSO-DSO and cross-border coordination.
New forecasting approaches will combine data-driven methods, digital twins to improve predictability of RES and demand. To maintain system security under high-RES penetration, the project will design advanced solutions for frequency and voltage stability, including fast-acting automated controllers and coordinated reactive power management. The project’s innovation is grounded in seven large-scale pilot sites across Europe, spanning different climatic and operational contexts. These pilots, involving 11 system operators (TSOs & DSOs), will test Co4RES tools in real-life conditions, including challenges from data centres, storage systems, and flexible demand assets. By unlocking demand-side flexibility and validating advanced coordination tools, Co4RES will demonstrate how distribution networks, transmission systems, and new consumers can become active resources for the energy system.
The project responds to the topic by delivering TRL6-8 solutions for control and operation of RES-based energy systems, increasing system stability, reducing integration costs, and paving the way for a reliable and affordable clean energy transition. The consortium brings together 39 partners from 15 European countries (DK, UK, PT, ES, HR, BA, MK, EL, TR, CY, NO, BE, EE, FR, DE), ensuring broad expertise, strong representation of TSOs, DSOs, RES providers, aggregators, SMEs and academia; a capacity to deliver impact across Europe.
