Objective
The energy transition towards clean energy and decarbonization has led to a surge in demand for critical raw materials like graphite, resulting in a 90% demand deficit by 2030, while EU imports 98% of its graphite consumption today. Sustainable raw materials are essential for implementing clean technology for mobility and EV batteries. However, natural graphite mining and processing involves inefficient processes and hazardous material, while synthetic graphite production is CO2 and energy intensive.
SPEAR provides a route towards clean and high-quality graphite, produced locally in the EU from harvested CO2. SPEAR will include advanced surface treatment processes for providing battery grade Graphite with properties beyond the state-of-the-art. Today, UP Catalyst is already scaling up its Molten Salt CO2 Capture and Electro-Transformation technology, to produce clean and sustainable graphite flakes locally in the EU. With SPEAR, we aim to elevate the quality of our graphite above both natural and synthetic graphite state-of-the-art through advanced surface treatment processes, spearheading the production of high-quality CRMs locally and sustainably in the EU.
