Objective
"R.Flo LLC proposes IRONMEM, a 24-month project to advance its microporous membrane from TRL 4 to TRL 6, enabling the first commercially viable, Nafion-free separator for All-Iron Redox Flow Batteries. The innovation is a low-cost ≤ €50/m² composite membrane on a PE/PP substrate with SiO2/TiO2 coating. It already achieves >95 % Coulombic Efficiency on 10×10 cm lab samples, eliminating expensive perfluorinated materials that comprise 30–40 % of stack costs. The project resolves three critical uncertainties:
By month 6, optimise formulation for ≥70 mS/cm conductivity, ≤10 % iron crossover over 1 000 h, and no capacity fade, delivering 10 m² validated rolls independently verified by NTUU ""KPI"" lab.
By month 12, integrate into 600 cm² 5-cell stack for ≥75 % DC/DC RTE with no capacity fade over 500 cycles, and publish external TEA confirming system CAPEX ≤ €100/kWh, securing ≥3 conditional framework agreements (min. 5 MWh total).
By month 24, produce 100 m² continuous roll on 30 cm pilot coater (yield >80 %, 1 000-cycle durability), achieve IEC 62932 certification pathway, and sign ≥3 unconditional supply contracts for post-project delivery. With a €496 250 lump-sum budget and 104 person-months from a nine-person team, we execute via four overlapping WPs: membrane development (WP1), stack/pilot construction (WP2), certification/operation (WP3), and commercialisation (WP4). Success yields a production-ready, IP-protected membrane enabling multi-MWh All-Iron systems at <50 % lithium-ion cost for 8–24 h storage. This civilian technology supports EU REPowerEU (45 GW target) and SDG7, fostering energy sovereignty in Ukraine and CEE amid supply-chain risks from China/Russia. Ready for Series A scale-up via possible JV and €14–20 M investment.
