Unibody Buildings for Urban Resilience

Objective

Urban resilience has become of paramount importance in Europe and worldwide. Amongst other considerations, urban resilience calls for paradigm shifts that minimise the, admittedly, large lifecycle costs of the residential sector. Arguably, these costs relate to energy demands of residential buildings and the way these respond and adapt to natural hazards, such as earthquakes, and climate change. Policy makers are convinced of the necessity to devise adaptable residential buildings that minimise their lifecycle costs. However, such an endeavour is challenging. It requires non-conventional simulation methods, to prognosticate the response of novel design concepts under multi-hazards over a targeted service life, along with reliable front-end tools that quantify the benefits of these concepts at the building and urban scale.

This proposal redefines the status quo for residential buildings aiming to achieve urban resilience. Our project is founded on an integrated approach comprising: (i) an intriguing “unibody design concept” that, by contrasting the current paradigm, leads to cost-efficient “damage-free” building response to short-term seismic loading along with a large reduction in operational energy demands; (ii) a revolutionary simulation transformation, which allows for time-based risk and lifecycle analyses of unibody buildings, by coupling time-dependent deterioration processes, due to weather extremes, along with short-term seismic response; (iii) multi-physics experiments benchmarking the unibody concept and contemplated simulation techniques; and (iv) a methodological framework for optimizing the performance-based design of unibody buildings over their service life, within seconds.

Our end goal is to deliver a paradigm shift for the residential sector, by distributing a readily implementable software (DARE), which will guide public policy makers to realise the benefits of the envisioned concept at the building and urban scale over a targeted service life.
