GEOSTATISTICS FOR FISH STOCK ASSESSMENT

Objective

The aim of the proposal is the development of geostatistics to improve the assessment of fish abundance from (1) acoustic measurements of fish density along line transects, and (2) trawl measurements of density at distinct stations, including specification of the estimation variance.

Two parallel tasks are to be undertaken at the beginning of the project; these are data selection (Task1), and the application of geostatistical techniques to the selected data sets (Task 2). Initial target species are cod, haddock, herring, sprat, and blue whiting, i.e. those commercial species of greatest economic importance to the EC. The completion of each analysis of a particular set of survey data will be marked by several forms of preliminary publication (Task 3). Compilation of worked analyses will establish the basis for extraction of rules to guide the application of geostatistics in fish abundance estimation (Task 4). The final task will be the publication of a comprehensive volume on the application (Task 5).
