Objective
TWIN-OPHTHALMO aims to strengthen the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU) in the field of AI-driven ophthalmic diagnostics and treatment through a structured Twinning approach with leading European partners, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) and Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT). The project addresses critical gaps in research performance, doctoral training, and research management capacity, contributing to the objectives of the Widening Participation and the European Research Area.
The project focuses on the development and application of advanced artificial intelligence methods for biomedical image analysis and multimodal ophthalmic diagnostics, targeting major eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. In parallel, it explores innovative biomaterials for controlled drug delivery, supporting the integration of diagnostics and treatment within a unified research framework.
TWIN-OPHTHALMO implements a comprehensive capacity-building strategy combining joint research activities, advanced training, researcher mobility, and institutional reform. It promotes the co-creation of knowledge through hands-on collaboration, enabling the transfer of expertise in AI, medical imaging, and research management. The project also modernises doctoral education through alignment with European best practices, fosters talent development, and strengthens international collaboration and industry engagement.
By integrating scientific excellence with institutional transformation, TWIN-OPHTHALMO will position STU as a competitive and internationally recognised research actor in AI-driven healthcare, ensuring long-term sustainability, increased participation in European programmes, and contribution to human-centric and trustworthy digital health solutions.
