Objective The main objectives of the Multiserve project are to initiate and to integrate research and development in the area of communication technology as well as the demonstration and usage of information within the Eastern European countries in partnership with the European Union. This implies that multiple sites in Central and Eastern Europe will be devised to develop scientific information services on top of IP-protocols using satellite links. The strategic goals of the project are the following: to establish a technology base which underlies a universally accessible information infrastructure, to develop and to deliver information and tele co-operation services throughout the partners of the project, with the aid of the state of the art communication technology, enabling realisation of prototype applications. Several development concepts for the realisation of the Multiserve Project have been studied and implemented pilot usage by GMD. The most favourite proposal at this project stage entails the maximum usage of the already existing services. This implies incorporating the existing satellite uplink station at GMD in St Augustin as the central hub and gateway to the western information sources, as well as using the existing up and down link stations at RAS/Moscow (from the GMD-RAS co-operation. As the envisaged traffic is highly asymmetric, one common down link channel with a capacity of minimum 256 kbits/s will be provided at the beginning, as well as slower uplink channels of 64 kbits for those partners without an usable internet connection. Transporter capacity of minimum 256 kbits/s and 3* 64 kbits/s has to be provided. Hence the necessary equipment will consist of three full up/down in Moscow, Bucharest and Sofia, and three receive only stations with IP connectivity for backchannels in St Petersburg, Vilnius and Bratislava respectively.
