Objetivo The IFRF, as co-ordinator, with partners University of Wales (UWCC) and ENEL, have agreed jointly to offer a continuation of the already operating HCM programme on large scale facilities as the EUROFLAM consortium, with the objective to increase the expertise of European graduate combustion scientists and engineers through the provision of training. The emphasis will be on the collection and development of data, using advanced measurement techniques in experimental combustion and emission reduction situations, plus the development of mathematical models and their use in the interpretation and correlation of these data. This should be achieved by making available the facilities of these institutions to visiting investigators from EU nations, who should work on a variety of on-going research programmes, in teams including experienced researchers from the staff of the institutions, and technical support staff. Each institution will offer a number of areas of research to the investigators. The duration of the modules will be up to six months. Reference to and comparison with the literature will be encouraged, and all investigators will be expected to present their work at a symposium at the end of the academic year in which their training period will take place. External assessment will take place on all investigators and a certificate of completion will be presented at the symposium. The programme offered by the IFRF can be divided into the following areas: semi-industrial scale classical experimentation, development and application of laser based diagnostics, development and application of coal combustion and pollutant characterisation facilities and development and application of mathematical models.
