Objective To identify and analyze the driving forces, strategies, the role of institutional regimes and of the key actors in the creation and diffusion of different types of environmental innovations in SMEs. To formulate a general policy framework for stimulation of environmental innovations in SMEs, as part of an ecological modernisation strategy.OBJECTIVES: To identify and analyze the driving forces, strategies, the role of institutional regimes and of the key actors in the creation and diffusion of different types of environmental innovations in SMEs. To formulate a general policy framework for stimulation of environmental innovations in SMEs, as part of an ecological modernisation strategy. DESCRIPTION: The research focuses on the role of selected innovative small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) in the creation and the adoption of environmental innovations, which may be 'end-of-pipe as well as 'process integrated . The project examines the creation and diffusion of environmental innovations within five very different national systems of innovation in Europe (The Netherlands, Denmark, United Kingdom, Italy and Portugal) and different clusters of manufacturing industry (e.g. paint industry, textile and apparel industry, printing industry, mechanical engineering, foundries, food processing). In these clusters, environmental innovations are required in order to reduce emissions and SMEs play a crucial part in the creation and diffusion of such innovations. The project consists of three stages: i) for each industrial sector and for each country selected the major characteristics, the technological trajectories and the national institutional framework, including actors, and policies, are examined; ii) in each country four case studies are carried out to identify the key actors in and outside the SME influencing the innovation and diffusion process; iii)the insights of the first two stages are used to examine the driving forces behind the generation and diffusion of environmental innovations in SMEs in general, to identify the key players in the national institutional frameworks and to analyze the most successful strategies by SMEs for environmental innovations.
