Monte-Carlo studies of protein-induced curvatures of bilayer membranes 5

Objective

The aggregation process of amphiphilic molecules, such as surfactants a lipids, into micelles, bilayers, vesicles and biological membranes, and the interaction between them, is involved in the most common cellular activity. One of the major challenges is to understand the structural aspects that lead to the formation of the most favoured structure under molecular geometry and packing constraints considerations that minimizes the interfacial energy per molecule. Particularly, the curvature of the vesicles, or lipid bilayers, can be regulated by altering the ratio of the different lipid types that can pack together. Therefore, when protein molecules are incorporated into these structures often result in a preferential clustering of specific lipids around a protein.
Our purpose is to study the effects of membrane proteins on the curvatu of bilayer membranes. In particular, we will consider two cases:
(1) Does a bilayer membrane change its local curvature at the particular site, where a single protein is inserted into the membrane?. How is the geometry of the protein related to a successful local bending of a membrane?. What are the relevant forces for this process?
(2) What are the relevant forces leading to aggregation of proteins and the subsequent induced curvature of the bilayer?. Is aggregation driven by the development of curvature?. How does the process of a protein-induced curvature of a bilayer differ from that of a monolayer ?
