Magma chamber ;dynamics and mechanisms of magma transport and emplacement

Objective

This project combines field observations with fluid dynamic models to develop understanding of the mechanisms controlling magma chamber evolution and magma transport and emplacement. Studies of magmatic evolution have traditionally been split between field observations and fluid dynamic modelling and this proposal is innovative in directly combining these two approaches (made possible by the applicant's background in both fields). Research would be conducted at Oxford University, where there is a concentration of expertise relating to structural geology and tectonics, and established expertise relating to the chosen field location in Ladakh, India. Numerical modelling would use computer codes already developed, to test and develop new hypotheses. The Ladakh batholith in the Indian Himalayas has been chosen as an ideal field locality because of the unique three-dimensional exposure due to high relief combined with arid conditions. The results would be of fundamental relevance for the understanding of the evolution of magmatic arcs.
