Multi-method high resolution surface electron microscopy of low-dimensional systems

Objective

Research objectives and content
The project has two objectives which are closely tied together: i) to develop surface electron microscopy with slow electrons to its fullest possible extent and ii) to apply it to the study of low-dimensional systems which are important in future high technology devices. The main emphasis on the methodology side is the integration of spectromicroscopy with synchrotron radiation generated characteristic photoelectrons into the arsenal of microscopies with slow (reflected, secondary, photoemission, thermionic emission,...) electrons. This is of utmost importance for the elemental identification of the imaged features which is presently missing. For this purpose the low energy electron microscope (LEEM) developed by Bauer and coworkers, which presently is being equipped with an improved energy analyzer, will be connected to an undulator beamline quasi-permanently and used for multimethod studies of thin film systems and mesoscopic surface structures. The thin film systems include magnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers, wide bandgap multilayers and other systems in which interdiffusion and interface roughness limit the desired physical properties. The mesoscopic surface structures include semiconductor quantum dots and wires as well as ultrafine ferromagnetic patterns. The samples will be supplied in part by various European research [ groups, in part prepared in situ by molecular beam epitaxy which has been done up to now without chemical characterization. |
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project is of utmost importance for my professional development. The possibility of combining a unique electron microscope with a powerful radiation source for an extended period will allow me to obtain pioneering scientific results needed for the habilitation which I am aiming at. Working in the international environment at Trieste will give me important professional connections for my future academic work.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The problems to be studied are of considerable relevance for current and future industrial development in sensing, information storage and display devices.
