Production technology and network for complex formed sheet metal components based upon talilored blanks

Objective

The objective of the project is to develop a flexible process for manufacturing of complex formed sheet metal components based upon autogenous laser butt welded tailored blanks. The process will be devoted to SME' s producing small batches of a wide range of products, requiring flexible, fast, cheap and longlife fixturing devices to overtake major problems of laser welding in production that are gap control and misalignement. This process will be transfered to a group of SMEs, establishing the necessary network amongst them enabling them to produce and market high complex sheet metal components to different industrial sectors, primary the automobile industry. In the project the different production steps for production of complex formed sheet metal components based upon autogenous laser butt welded tailored blanks will be developed. These steps are: Blank preparation, where both fine laser cutting and fine blanking will be developed to meet the demands from the laser welding process. Autogenous laser welding, where the stringent fixturing requirements, which laser butt welding demands, are going to be solved in flexible fixtures, allowing small and medium batches to be produced economically. Sheet metal forming, where the formability problems around the hard weld will be addressed. None of the involved partners has the knowledge and the means to overtake the technical risks associated to the project in the targeted aspects.
