Research objectives and content
The Re/Os decay system is a new geochemical tool to study mantle processes. Its behaviour during magma formation and extraction is not well understood at the present time, due to the very specific chemical properties of these two elements (siderophile-chalcophile-lithophile). In a previous work, we have demonstrate the role of within-mantle cumulate crystallization to explain the systematically evolved chemical characters of MORBs (Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts). In this project we attempt to use the same gabbroic suite found in the Oman ophiolite as a 'natural laboratory' to study and understand the Re/Os systematics during ocean crust formation. Special attention to Re/Os behaviour in melt extraction, migration and interaction processes should provide explanations to the observed Os isotopic disequilibrium between mantle residus and MORBs. This project is also hoped to provide a set of new high-quality data to geochemists who work on this particular isotopic tracer.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The complete formation on Os separation technic (using the new chemical procedure), including test of yield, blanks, standarts plus analysis on selected samples should last 6 to 8 months. The last months will be used for the interpretation of Os isotopic signatures and the integration of these results in models of magma extraction and migration at oceanic ridges.
Scientific objectives and benefits: The main objective is the understanding of the Re/Os behaviour during magma extraction from the mantle. Previous works on this topics have focussed on the analysis of oceanic lava or mantle residus. We think that the cumulates features of Oman could be a clue to understand the Re/Os systematics.
Personal objectives and benefits: The Mainz MPI is one of the best geochemical laboratory in Europe (scientific staff, equipments). My first objective is to learn one of the very up-to-date geochemical technic (Os separation and isotopic measurement). The main benefit will be the scientific collaboration with Pr. A.W. Hofmann (1996 Goldsmith gold medalist).
