Objective
Research objectives and content
The aim of the research project is the characterization of the processes involved in the chemical erosion of the continental lithosphere by upwelling asthenosphere. To accomplish it, we propose a combined geochemical ane quantitative microstructural study of mantle xenoliths from Massif Central (France) and peridotites from Ronda massif (Spain). The project involves combined geochemical analyses and advanced imaging techniques in the same samples to provide a quantitative description of chemical and microstructural variations involved in this geodynamic process. Main objectives are the characterization and evaluation of melt-rock reactions involved in the erosion of the lithosphere and their role in the modification of the microstructure of lithospheric peridotites, as wel as the study of grain growth mechanism during this process. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The objective of the training is to provide the candidate with a rather unique research profile (geochemical and structural) for thc study of mantle processes. The training benefits will be specially important in the kinematic and microstructural analysis of peridotites, in which the candidate has not previous experience, and numerical modeling of melt migration processes. The candidate will greatly benefit from the experience of the Tectonophysics and Geochemistry group at the host institute in these research fields.
