Ultimate higgs boson searches at lep

Objective



Research objectives and content
The main objective is to develop the ultimate search for the standard model Higgs boson in ALEPH at LEP. The Higgs boson is the only missing link of the standard model and its discovery would be the confirmation of all its predictions. The project can be | divided in four principal points. a) Make sure that the hermiticity of the ALEPH detector is optimally exploited. The new BCAL subdetector will play an | important role in this issue. My previous work with BCAL at IFAE will then be very useful. b) Develop selection procedures efficient for a 110-115 GeV/c2 Higgs boson. This will imply deep knowledge of the underlying theory, the detector capabilities, and sophisticated analysis techniques. c) The central aspect will be the data analysis itself. This will conclude with the last (and most important) ALEPH publication on Higgs boson searches. d) In parallel with the analysis task I will devote a sizeable part of my time to detector aspects: continuing with BCAL and also participating on developments and tests for CMS.
Traning content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This work will be done in close collaboration with the main experts of the subjects, both for data analysis and for detector developments, and will therefore provide me with a lot of experience as an experimentalist in particle physics. The acquired knowledge will represent an important benefit for my laboratory when I am back in Spain.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The industrial relevance of this project is related with my work on CMS. All LHC experiments will need R&D on high- technology as well as a large industrial production due to the size of the detectors.
