Acceleration models for solar energetic particles using observations from the Soho and Ace missions

Objective

Research objectives and content
The main goal of this project is the development of an acceleration model for solar energetic particles, which is quantitatively consistent with the recent high energy observations provided by the ESA/NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the recently launched NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) missions. The innovation of this project is to include acceleration, transport, trapping/escape of the particles, due to the ambient medium, and the energy release process during solar energetic events. Additionally, I plan to perform a comparative study of the acceleration mcchanisms proposed so far, regarding the different physical conditions under which solar energetic events can be electron- or ion-dominated. The success of this project will be based on the interpretation of high energy observational data, and the use of analytical methods and advanced numerical simulation techniques.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This fellowship will be an excellent opportunity for me to broaden my experience in working with problems of energetic particle acceleration. This topic is of interest not only to Solar Physics, as acceleration and transport of high energetic particles occur in many Astrophysical sites (i.e. astrophysical jets, supernova remnants etc.). I will benefit enormously from the expertise of the MPE Group in performing numerical simulations and interpreting observational data in solar and space physics problems. My continuous collaboration with co-workers at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki during this fellowship and my return afterwards will help to establish and maintain a strong European collaboration within this and future projects.
