Development of methods for predictive toxicity testing with reference to neurotoxic volatile chemicals.

Objectif

The present proposal aims at providing innovative tools and more effective methods for mechanism-based risk assessment of neurotoxic compounds. A novel apparatus for the exposure of cell in culture to volatile agents will be developed. In addition selected cell types representing specific molecular neuronal targets for the toxic agents studied (carbon monoxide, hexane and styrene) will be used as in vitro experimental models. The final aim is to find and propose in vitro tests that could reduce the need for animal studies. By investigating a variety of possible end-points and using a multidisciplinary approach, the overall novelty of the project and the likelihood of a major advance in the field are greatly increased.
