Limit strains for severe accident conditions

Objective

For severe accidents large structural deformations should be allowed with strain s reaching a certain fraction of the failure strains. But knowledge on the deformation capacity of relevant structures is lacking. Therefore the failure strains of essential reactor components are to be investigated. To apply small-scale model tests to reactor dimensions, size effects on the local failure strains are of special interest. Test families are defined with specimens of typical strain distributions caused by uniaxial and biaxial static and dynamic loads. Within one test family the geometries are similar, but the size is varied up to re actor dimensions. To deepen the understanding of structural degradation and fracture and to allow extrapolations, advanced computational methods will be developed and validated. Based on the results admissible strains will be proposed. This provides a means to show that existing reactors are able to withstand severe accidents.
