Objective
The appropriate disposal to hazardous waste is a technological challenge. Simple, practical and cost effective technology should be developed to safeguard public health and the environment. Temporary storage at ground level is common in many European countries, a technique often environmentally unfriendly. Private enterprises and communities are responsible for the contamination but the cost of safe disposal is often considered unacceptable and the critical situation may become permanent. Disposal in abandoned mines is believed to be an achievable, low risk and economic way of disposal. The project goal is to investigate the prerequisites of this alternative, outline suitable design and construction technology and assess performance with regard to cost and environmental safety.
