Objective This project is to contribute to the sustainable improvement in Hazel's bean production in poor and marginal areas of South America. Genotypes able to reach optimum productivity under biotic stress will be selected. The main factor to be studied will be solar radiation. The project will be focused on the identification of genotypes with different capacities to use solar radiation in photosynthesis and in photomorphogenesis. Both, beneficial and detrimental responses to intensities and spectral ranges of radiation (including UV-B) will be studied in combination with water, temperature and nutritional stress. Cultivars will be selected and characterised from germless collections of the University of Chilean the gene bank of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) at Colombia. New genotypes will also be collected from areas of different latitude and altitude where there is widely differing exposure to these stress factors.
