Objective

SEAX is a comprehensive software package developed by the Essex Record Office to handle all aspects of archive management including cataloguing, search and retrieve facilities to full international standards. The project will trial and evaluate the public access module of SEAX by offering it on the Internet, and in the Branch Record Offices at Colchester and Saffron Walden; and will trial and evaluate the Archivist module in the Northampton record Office in "real life" conditions. The outturns of the project evaluation will be published and a business plan prepared for further exploitation.

Objectives:
The broad objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of SEAX as a comprehensive software system for the total management of archive collections.

There are two main systems to be evaluated:
1. The Archivist (Professional) module will be evaluated by independent professional archivists in a real life installation in the Northamptonshire Record Office;
2. The project will finalise the Internet launch of the Public Access module and will add digital images of archives, and will rigorously evaluate the entire system from the users and archivists point if view.

The operational impact on ERO and NRO will be assessed. This evaluation is expected to lead to further development and, if justified, a business plan for use of the system by other European archives.

Work description:
The work to be done is shown in the worpackages.
WP 1 will finalise and test the web enablement, leading to the launch of SEAX on the Internet.
WP 2 will install the current version of SEAX for evaluation in the Northamptonshire Record Office.
WP 3 will add a substantial number of digital images of archives (target 5000 images) to the SEAX public access digital collection.
WP 4 is a comprehensive evaluation process, making use of online response forms, questionnaires, user interviews, focus groups, and an Evaluation Workshop, all leading to published outturn reports.
WP 5 ensures wide dissemination of the outcomes in the United Kingdom and across Europe, through reports, journal articles and conferences in the United Kingdom, as well as European archives conferences.
WP 6 deals with the management of the project and reporting to the Commission.

Milestones:
Milestones:
M1 System development complete, SEAX on web, trial system installed in Northants.
M2 5000 archive images added.
M3 Evaluation process and PIs agreed.
M4 Interim evaluation reports.
M5 Final report on project, evaluation, dissemination.
