Towards an improved second level trigger strategy for lhcb

Objective

The LHCb experiment has been designed to study the production and decay of particles containing bottom hadrons and investigate the mechanisms of CP violation. The trigger is an essential component, as it has the complex task of selecting interesting candidate events from the overwhelming bulk of background; it has to be fast, flexible and efficient. This proposal is concerned with the implementation of the second level trigger. It was realized that the incorporation in the second level trigger of information from the first level resulted in an increase in the efficiencies. But the total computing time also increased to 2-3 times longer than the acceptable limit. This project aims at studying strategies and algorithms to improve both the selection efficiency and the speed of the second level trigger. The main issues to address are:
(1) study efficiency improvements to the present trigger algorithm including more tracking info ffilation, and compare with previous versions,
(2) increase the speed of the track reconstruction using artificial intelligence techniques such as cellular automata,
(3) study different strategies in the trigger, comparing a trigger that concentrates on a few specific bottom mesons decays to one that looks for global bottom mesons signatures. The improvement in speed, efficiency and robustness of the LHCb trigger is essential for the Physics goals of the LHCb experiment; therefore the proposed project will have a clear and most relevant impact on LHCb.
