Objective
The aim of this study is to carry out anthracological examinations on charcoal samples from the different layers of 9 sites around sand dunes of Finnish Lapland. The sites are from East to the West along the polar tree limit in Northernmost Finland. Two of them are esker-dune regions, with several, sometimes up to 35 charcoal layers in one exposure. All sites have several exposures. The project include collection of new samples from the sites according to fine-stratigraphy and anthracological methods, application of pedoanthracological methods - to draw conclusions on former forest density-density changes-climatic factors in the different ages, tree species identification on the charcoal pieces - forest type succession - follow forest and tree limit oscillations in time. By comparing the results from the different sites at the different age horizons - forest oscillations in space can be traced. Tree age-forest age determination, xylotomical examinations and conclusions on fires are also objectives. Radiocarbon dating are to be done, as well. We would like to compare the results to Hungarian Plesitocene finds. Also is aim to carry out botanical-vegetational investigations on the today forests of Finland - to be able to stand a model close enough for the Hungarian Pleistocene vegetational reconstructions. Finally preparation of a reference collection of charred wood for Hungary for the Pleistocene interstadial vegetation identification is an aim as well. There are also old charcoal samples at the Department of Geography, University of Helsinki, which had already been radiocarbon dated. It is also important to examine these samples as described above.
