Models combining ecology and epidemiology-wild boars and swine fever

Objective

Post-doctoral fellowships in wildlife disease modeling The UFZ - Centre f. Environmental Research, Leipzig-Halle Germany, is offering two two-year fellowships for epidemiologists at the Dep. of Ecological Modelling (OESA). The OESA group has a team of more than 25 scientists working on modeling projects in theoretic and applied ecology. One aspect of current research is the management of pathogens in natural populations. The fellows establishes a new modeling project concerning the Classical Swine Fever in wild boars. The project orients towards the model-based evaluation and optimization of control strategies against CSF in wild-boars. The results of the modeling project will have an immediate impact on CSF control practices due to close contacts to veterinary health offices. For both fellowships the successful applicant must have a PhD degree and demonstrated expertise in modeling (animal) diseases. The fellow will hold the full responsibility for the epidemiological competence of the project. Applicants must be prepared to work in an international and interdisciplinary research team. First fellowship (start in 2002): The fellow will develop a model for the within-herd dynamics of CSF in wild-boar. The applicant must be intimately acquainted with the specifics of (wildlife) diseases. The fellow should be able to convert empirical knowledge into the conceptual framework of modeling. Skills in computer programming are advantageous but not necessary. Second fellowship (start in 2004): The fellow will evaluate the CSF control strategy on a between herd-level and should derive innovative new strategies for improvements. Therefore, the applicant must be acquainted with disease control strategies in wildlife, their shortcomings and political relevance. Also, competence concerning the cost-benefit of wildlife disease management will be useful. Skills in computer programming are advantageous but not necessary. UFZ is an equal opportunity employer and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
