Objective The main objective of the proposal is to perform an "International Symposium on Off-site Emergency Management" in Salzburg, Austria, in autumn 2003. The main objectives of the symposium are to review the current capabilities for the management of nuclear emergencies (including the long term management and restoration of contaminated areas), and the challenges for the future. The methodological and technological developments made over the past decade will be described together with the extent to which these have been taken up for operational use in emergency centres. It is expected that a clear view emerges where new and enhanced information, technological and methodological improvements are necessary and how these techniques will be integrated in a more consistent and efficient concept of emergency management in Europe. In that way, a dialogue will be stimulated and feedback is expected between policy, operational and R&D communities involved in off-site accident management.
