Functional new comb polymers : design, synthesis and properties

Objective

The first step will consist in designing the more promising comb polymers depending on the markets (ranging from Personal Care to Detergency, Papermaking), in other words depending on the targeted properties (surface modification) : this will be done in strong relation with various specialized physico-chemists and application teams. Prior art (literature and patents), if any, will also be taken into account. The first market considered will be the Agro chemistry market. Indeed, recent experimental data showed that some comb polymers lead the formation of very small and redispersible metallic hydroxides used as fongicides in Agriculture (vineyards). Since small particles are much more active than bigger particles, this should allow to significantly reduce the amount of fongicide used for the treatments. In a second step, the comb polymers will be prepared through free radical copolymerization of a monomer and a macro monomer. Both commercially available macro monomers and innovative macro monomers industrialized by Rhodia will be used. The polymer characterization will be carried out using standard techniques: GPC, NMR (molecular weights, structure), HPLC, GC (conversion of the monomers). The special characterizations (MALDI) will be done with the help of the Analytical Group. The polymerization process will be optimized in order to reduce the free monomer levels and better control the polymer composition. The physico-chemical properties of the polymer will be studied in model formula. For example, concerning the Agrochemicals application, the impact of polymer structure and polymer composition on the size, geometry, stability of the particles will be studied. The performances in the final applications will be systematically evaluated with the help of the application teams. A strong cooperation between the polymer synthesis fellow and the physico-chemist one will be determinant to optimize the polymer structure and composition, to finally obtain a polymer that is both industriable and performing.
