Objective Over the last 5 years the field of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and related phenomena has developed from the point of proof of principle to a mature field in which deep theoretical understanding is vital for the interpretation of ever more sophisticated experiments. The present project is linking the theoretical skills of the NIS participants to the experiments/theory in progress at four research centres in the European Union. The idea is to study novel Bose-condensed states in traps, such as phase-fluctuating condensates (quasicondensates), macroscopically excited condensates (condensates with solitons and/or vortices), and "strongly interacting" and dipolar macroscopic quantum states. The theory to be developed relies on tuning of the spatial dimensionality and on modifying the interparticle interaction, in particular by inducing long-range interatomic forces. In this way the properties of dilute gases can be tuned from weakly interacting to strongly correlated. These ideas will be implemented experimentally by magnetostatic and optical means. Related ideas will be developed for achieving the BCS superfluid phase transition in ultracold trapped Fermi gases. Also the properties of degenerate molecular quantum gases are part of the project. The objectives of the project are:1. The investigation of soliton structures and superfluidity in quasi-1D trapped gases;2. The investigation of the kinetics of formation of Bose-Einstein condensates;3. The study of tunnelling phenomena in Bose-condensed gases;4. The investigation of rotating Bose condensates and vortex states;5. The study of the BCS transition in trapped Fermi gases;6. The investigation of "strongly interacting" and dipolar quantum gases.
