Objective
PEPCY will provide a comprehensive characterisation of the health hazards fromoligopeptides in cyan bacteria, assess human exposure risks, provide adequate monitoring tools, develop a risk management framework in communication with endures groups in environmental and public health, and produce dissemination materials for the general public and for professional groups. This includes toxicological assessment (exposure pathways, effects and underlying mechanisms), description of ecophysiological and environmental factors regulating toxic peptide content, and field investigations of toxin occurrence and regulation in surface waters. Tools for prediction, detection (molecular, chemical & biochemical) and quantification (including & MALDI-TOF MS) of toxic cyan peptides will be developed and key risk factors identified for incorporation into the decision trees of the risk management framework.
