Resistance of concrete to chloride ingress - from laboratory tests to in-field performance (CHLORTEST)

Objective

Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is the most important degradation process in reinforced concrete structures. It has very important economical and social consequences due to the need for diverting resources for repairing damaged structures and sometimes the need to close the facility for carrying out the repair work. Presently, no quantitative performance requirements are included in the European standards. Thus, relevant models for service life prediction and accelerated performance test methods including acceptance criteria are needed. This proposal intends to arrive at laboratory test methods applicable to EU states based on non-biased approaches and evaluations, and to recommend the practical use of the laboratory performance tests based on the verification of the in-field performance of concrete under different chloride exposure environments.
