Development of methodologies in order to measure the migration of non-phthalate compounds from pvc plasticised articles

Objective

Plasticiser are substances mainly used in softening PVC. The use of such substances, specially, phthalates, in PVC toys intended to be put into the mouth for children under three has produced a great controversy and confronted opinions. Phthalates have been banned in toys for children under three intended to be put into the mouth (Decision of the Commission of 7 December 1999) and one of the reasons for that was the lack of a method for measuring the amount of phthalate migrated. Most of manufacturers have changed the plasticisers in their products so methods in order to determine the amount of plasticiser migrated from a soft PVC article are necessary, specially when the article is a toy product. A lot of factors must be considered when developing a method for migration. Sample preparation is one of the most important and careful optimization must be done with these factors. This is the aim of this proposal, also including a validation.
