Objectif Observing the scientific agenda can monitor contributions of R&D activities to solve societal problems. This implies that monitoring the cognitive landscape of an R&D field provides a tool for assessing socio-economic impact of R&D. We propose to achieve this by a self-organized, document co-word based map, in which the internal structure of an R&D field is visualized. By applying cognitive mapping methods, we enhance the structure with expert input thus enabling users to explore the map from the perspective of a particular socio-economic problem. In addition, the maps will be enhanced with information on the performance of institutions. This will enable us to identify, for instance, the major actors as well as European co-operation linkages.
