Synchrotron Applications in Nanometre and FemTosecond Science

Objective

BESSY is a major provider of synchrotron radiation (SR) for research and technological applications in the world. The infrastructure brings together a large number of (in-house and external) scientists and disciplines from biology to solid state physics and materials science. At present, BESSY is constructing one new SR source: the "femtosecond slicing" x-ray installation at BESSY II, and is planning a second one: the BESSY-Free Electron Laser (FEL), a linac-based "HGHG" FEL for soft x-rays. These sources will make it feasible to combine spectro-microscopic information with the dynamics of physical, chemical and biological processes on time and length-scales down to femtoseconds and nanometres, respectively. The related science cases are new and require a unique combination of existing lab-based expertise with synchrotron-radiation-based technologies unavailable today. This Marie Curie Host Fellowship Programme will bring in experienced researchers and very experienced experts from biology to optical physics to share their expertise in ultrafast phenomena, optical bio-microscopy, laser spectroscopy and nanotechnologies with in-house scientists. Particular effort will be to attract experts from the new EU members states. Goals are to train scientists (in-house and external), and to develop new experimental and theoretical methods in non-machine-orientated areas of science in coherence with the machine-based development of future SR sources. This programme will create the interdisciplinary and synergetic expertise for new research collaborations among European scientists. In result, we also expect to have new state-of-the-art instrumentation made-in-Europe for research at future 4th generation light sources.
