Objective It is intended in this research to develop methods of laser welding of thick (>15 mm) plates by alloying the weld pool through filler wire additions during welding in order to reduce hardness gradients and improve toughness properties in the weld seam arising from the rapid cooling. The optimum conditions for filler wire feed relative to the seam geometry will be studied to ensure uniform distribution of alloying additions. Steels to be used include normalised and thermo-mechanically rolled grades up to 690 Mpa.
